Hedgehog Thorny Tower Snail (Thiara scabra)

Overview:
The Hedgehog Thorny Tower Snail is a unique freshwater snail known for its elongated, conical shell covered with small thorn-like projections, giving it a “hedgehog” appearance. Its interesting texture and active grazing behaviour make it a striking and functional addition to planted and community aquariums.

Origin:
Native to Southeast Asia, Thiara scabra inhabits rivers, streams, and estuarine environments with sandy or muddy substrates.

Feeding:
Omnivorous. Feeds on algae, biofilm, detritus, and leftover fish food. Supplement with sinking pellets, algae wafers, or blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach if natural food is limited.

Tank / Setup Requirements:

• Minimum tank size: 30 litres (8 gallons)

• Sand or fine gravel substrate recommended for burrowing and grazing

• Provide rocks, driftwood, and plants for grazing surfaces

• Stable water conditions with moderate filtration

Tank Mates:
Peaceful species compatible with small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Avoid snail-eating fish such as puffers, loaches, or crabs.

Behaviour:
Active and slow-moving. Constantly grazes on algae and detritus. May occasionally burrow into the substrate. Reproduction typically occurs in freshwater, and they can establish colonies under favorable conditions.

Experience Level:
Beginner to intermediate. Hardy and easy to care for when maintained in stable water conditions.

• pH: 6.8–8.0

• Hardness: Moderate to hard water for shell strength
