How do I propagate my corals?

It’s recommended that you frag, or propagate, your corals outside of water. If you are fragging a coral with large polyps, gently wave your hand over these polyps and encourage them to retract before you remove the coral from your aquarium.

To frag your coral, use the coral cutters or scalpel (where appropriate) and remove a small piece of coral from the mother colony. As long as you gently handle your coral you should do it no damage, though it’s always best to wear gloves to protect both yourself and the coral while fragging.

After removing the frag from the mother colony, return the mother colony to the water. Then, using a quality coral epoxy/glue, attach the frag to a rock or plug and return it to the water. Over time, the frag will grow and encrust the rock or plug.
