Leopard Moray Eel – Gymnothorax favagineus
Overview:
The Leopard Moray Eel is a majestic marine predator renowned for its distinctive leopard-like pattern of dark spots on a lighter body, making it one of the most visually striking morays. Its elongated, muscular body and secretive behavior make it a captivating centerpiece for large marine aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, commonly found in coral reefs, rocky crevices, and lagoons from East Africa to the central Pacific.
Feeding:
Carnivorous – thrives on small fish, crustaceans, and meaty marine foods. In captivity, provide shrimp, squid, clams, and other frozen or live preparations.
Tank Mates:
Best housed with larger, non-aggressive fish. Avoid small fish or invertebrates, which may be considered prey. Ideal for species-specific tanks or carefully selected community setups.
Aggression:
Semi-aggressive/predatory – generally peaceful toward larger tank mates but predatory to smaller species.
Experience Level:
Advanced – requires a well-established aquarium with secure rockwork and ample hiding spaces.
