Malaysian Trumpet Snail (Melanoides tuberculata) – 2 cm
Overview:
The Malaysian Trumpet Snail is a highly beneficial freshwater snail known for its elongated, cone-shaped shell and excellent substrate-cleaning behaviour. This hardy species naturally burrows through the substrate, helping to aerate the soil and prevent harmful gas buildup in aquariums.
Origin:
Native to Southeast Asia and parts of Africa, Melanoides tuberculata is commonly found in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and ponds with soft substrates.
Feeding:
Omnivorous scavenger. Feeds on detritus, algae, leftover fish food, and organic waste within the substrate. Additional feeding is usually unnecessary in well-established aquariums.
Tank / Setup Requirements:
-
Minimum tank size: 20 litres (5 gallons)
-
Sand or fine gravel substrate recommended for natural burrowing behaviour
-
Thrives in planted aquariums and established tanks
-

Tank Mates:
Compatible with most peaceful freshwater fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Avoid snail-eating fish such as puffers or certain loaches.
Behaviour:
Primarily nocturnal and spends much of its time burrowing in the substrate. This behaviour helps keep the substrate healthy and reduces compacted areas in planted aquariums.
Experience Level:
Beginner friendly. Extremely hardy and easy to maintain, making it a popular choice for natural aquarium maintenance.
