Sulphur is one of the most common elements found in seawater. It's an essential element for corals, which use it to build their exoskeletons and maintain their intense colours. The zooxanthellae that live inside corals also rely on sulphur for nutrition.

In a closed system like a reef tank, sulphur is continually consumed so its levels need to be regularly monitored. A sulphur deficiency can lead to diseases in some corals, as well as impair the metabolic processes of other marine organisms.

A deficiency in sulphur is quite hard to spot. If your corals and other animals are showing pale colours, poor growth, and evidence of bacterial infections, then you may have a sulphur deficiency.
