Description
The Wild Spotted Betta (Betta picta) is a peaceful, hardy, and underrated wild Betta species native to the slow-moving forest streams and rice paddies of Indonesia. Its name “picta†means “painted,†referring to the subtle speckled patterns that adorn its body, giving it a naturally camouflaged look.
Unlike the aggressive domestic Betta splendens, Betta picta is calm and can be kept in small groups. Males and females are similar in appearance, although males may show more vibrant coloration during courtship.
This species is a paternal mouthbrooder—after spawning, the male incubates the eggs in his mouth until fry are released, making them fascinating to observe during breeding.
Ideal for planted aquariums or Southeast Asian biotope setups, they appreciate subdued lighting, plenty of cover, and stable water conditions. They thrive on a diet of live and frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworms, and micro-pellets.
The Wild Spotted Betta is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a peaceful, low-maintenance wild Betta with unique behavior and natural beauty. Their rarity in the hobby makes them a prized species among enthusiasts.
