Description

Parachanna africana, also known as the African Snakehead or Niger Snakehead, is a fascinating species native to west-central Africa. Found mainly in coastal river systems, this fish is a thrust predator and likely a nest-builder, similar to other members of the Channidae family.

Snakeheads possess an accessory respiratory organ, enabling them to breathe atmospheric air and survive for extended periods out of water. This makes a tight-fitting lid essential for their aquarium, as they can leap out when startled or excited during feeding.

Tank Setup & Compatibility

Due to their aggressive and predatory nature, species-specific tanks are strongly recommended. In larger setups, they may coexist with robust, comparably sized fish such as large cichlids, catfish, Gars, or sizable Plecos. Avoid smaller tank mates, as these are likely to become prey.

Feeding
