Description:
Apistogramma Borellii, commonly known as the Umbrella Cichlid, is a beautifully coloured dwarf cichlid with a calm yet inquisitive nature. Males are particularly vivid, displaying rich colours on the fins and body, while females offer a more subtle but charming appearance.
This species thrives in a natural setup with a fine sandy substrate and plenty of hiding places created using driftwood, clay pots, or rocks. They do well in planted aquariums but also appreciate open areas for swimming.
Though generally peaceful, they may become territorial during breeding, so providing enough space and structure is key. Avoid housing them with small or delicate invertebrates such as dwarf shrimp. In larger aquariums, robust shrimp and snails may be suitable companions. If breeding is intended, it’s best to minimise or eliminate other tank mates.
Feeding:
Feeding Apistogramma borellii is simple. They readily accept a variety of foods including high-quality dry, frozen, and live meaty options such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. A well-balanced and varied diet is essential for maintaining vibrant colouration and overall health.
