Description:
Apistogramma Hoignei is a charming and underrated member of the dwarf cichlid family. Native to the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela, this species exhibits elegant, shimmering colours, especially in males. Their gentle disposition makes them a good fit for peaceful community aquariums, provided they are given enough space and hiding spots.
This species prefers a soft, sandy substrate and plenty of natural cover, such as leaf litter, driftwood, and caves formed from rocks or clay pots. Live plants are also appreciated, and they help maintain water quality while providing shelter. During breeding, males may display territorial behaviour, so ensure ample space and visual barriers are available.
Avoid keeping with small invertebrates like dwarf shrimp, as they may be preyed upon. More robust shrimp and snails may be suitable companions in a larger setup. For breeding, it is advisable to house them in a species-only tank or keep tank mates to a minimum.
Feeding:
Feeding Apistogramma Hoignei is straightforward. They accept a wide range of high-quality foods, including micro pellets, frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and live foods where available. A varied diet will enhance their colouration and overall vitality.
