Description
Apistogramma Nijsseni, also known as the Panda Dwarf Cichlid, is a visually striking and behaviorally fascinating species native to the soft, acidic blackwaters of Peru’s Ucayali River basin. Named after Dutch ichthyologist Han Nijssen, this fish is beloved by aquarists for its bold color contrast and manageable size.
The males display shimmering blue bodies with red and orange highlights on their fins, while the females exhibit bright yellow bodies with a distinctive black mask over the eyes and gill plates — hence the nickname "Panda Apisto."
Best suited to heavily planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spaces such as caves, coconut shells, and driftwood, this species thrives in stable, low-pH environments. Leaf litter and subdued lighting help replicate their natural habitat and bring out their full coloration.
During breeding, females become highly protective and care for the eggs and fry in secluded spots. Their interesting social behaviors and strong maternal instincts make them highly rewarding for dedicated aquarists.
Apistogramma Nijsseni is ideal for aquarists seeking a peaceful but character-rich dwarf cichlid that brings vivid color and personality to a South American biotope or planted tank.
