Background Plants

A good background sets the tone for the whole aquarium. Tall plants frame your aquascape, creating a sense of depth and providing fish with a sheltered, natural-looking backdrop. Choose plants best suited for your lighting and setup, and group several stems of the same species together for a fuller look.

Help and advice on shopping for: Background Plants

Add height to your aquascape

Tall, fast-growing plants set the scene at the back of your tank. Background plants can be positioned to hide equipment, shade fish and shrimp, and give your layout some depth. Choose stem plants such as Rotala, Ludwigia, and Hygrophila, or Vallisneria and Amazon Sword for height, available in pots or bunches as single or multi packs.

Choosing and placing tall plants

Plant them along the back glass and trim the stems to keep growth bushy. Many background species, such as Rotala rotundifolia, grow quickly and give dense, tall growth once established. Tall plants need quality lighting to stay full lower down, and using plant fertiliser helps support growth.
