Description:

The Assamese Spotted Purple Snakehead (Channa stewartii) is native to the Bagmati, Brahmaputra, Gandaki, and Koshi drainages in India, and the Bagmati, Gandaki, Kankai, Kamala, Karnali, and Koshi rivers in Nepal. This species inhabits a wide variety of habitats, including still ponds and running streams.

Aquarium Requirements:

Snakeheads possess an accessory respiratory organ, allowing them to breathe atmospheric air. A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent jumping. Species-specific aquariums are recommended due to their aggressive and predatory nature. They can coexist with large cichlids (like gars), large catfish, and sizable plecos. Tank mates should be chosen carefully and be comparable in size.

Feeding:

As ferocious predators, they primarily eat live fish but also consume frogs, insects, and crayfish in the wild. In captivity, they require a steady supply of live fish but will accept live earthworms, frogs, crickets, and dry foods.
