Description:
The Black and Gold Cobra Snakehead, scientifically known as Channa aurantimaculata and often referred to as the Golden Cobra Snakehead, is a visually striking predatory fish from the family Channidae. Native to South Asia – including India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka – this species has also been introduced to regions in Southeast Asia and even parts of East Africa.
Its bold colouration and vivid patterns make it a favourite among snakehead enthusiasts. Despite its aggressive nature, its manageable size and unique appearance make it one of the most sought-after species in the hobby.
Behaviour and Aquarium Requirements:
Like all snakeheads, this species possesses an accessory respiratory organ, enabling it to breathe atmospheric air. This means it can survive in low-oxygen environments and even out of water for extended periods. For this reason, a strong, tightly fitting aquarium lid is essential, as they are prone to jumping, especially during feeding or when startled.
The Black and Gold Cobra Snakehead is highly territorial and best suited to a species-specific setup. However, it may coexist with similarly sized, robust tank mates such as large catfish, large plecos, or gars, provided there is ample space. Tank mates must be chosen carefully, as smaller fish will be seen as prey.
Feeding:
In the wild, this species consumes large amounts of live prey including fish, frogs, crustaceans, and insects. In captivity, it should be offered a steady diet of live feeder fish, earthworms, crickets, and frogs. Over time, many specimens will accept frozen foods and high-protein pellets, but variety is key to optimal health and colouration.
