Description:

The Blue Rainbow Snakehead (Channa andrao), also known in the trade as Channa sp. “Blue Bleheri”, is one of the smallest and most vividly coloured species in the snakehead family. Native to swampy regions of northern India (West Bengal / Assam), this species typically reaches a maximum length of around 10 cm in the wild, though exceptional specimens may grow up to 15 cm in captivity.

Unlike many other snakehead species, C. andrao lacks ventral fins and is often mistaken for C. bleheri. However, it can be distinguished by the absence of the orange-red spots found in the caudal fins of bleheri.

This is a mouthbrooding species that matures early, making it a fascinating choice for experienced aquarists interested in breeding behaviour.

Special Considerations:

Like all snakeheads, Channa andrao possesses a unique accessory respiratory organ, allowing it to breathe atmospheric air and survive out of water for extended periods. As a result, a tight-fitting and secure lid is absolutely essential to prevent escape.

Due to their predatory nature and potential aggression, species-specific aquariums are recommended. While they may coexist with very large and equally aggressive tankmates (such as gars, large catfish, or adult plecos), careful monitoring is required.

Feeding:

These carnivorous predators primarily feed on live foods such as small fish, frogs, insects, and crustaceans. In captivity, they will accept a range of live offerings including feeder fish, earthworms, crickets, and frogs. They may also be conditioned to accept frozen foods and high-quality dry pellets over time.
