Description:
The Bullseye Snakehead (Channa marulius), also known as the Great Snakehead, is one of the largest and most striking snakehead species found in South Asia. While similar populations exist in Southeast Asia, they are now considered to be separate species.
This fish is known for its elongated body, powerful swimming ability, and distinctive "bullseye" marking near the tail. It thrives in large aquariums and should only be kept by aquarists experienced with aggressive, predatory fish.
Behaviour and Aquarium Requirements:
Like all snakeheads, the Bullseye Snakehead possesses an accessory respiratory organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air. Because of this, it's vital to maintain a secure, tight-fitting lid on the aquarium to prevent escapes, especially during feeding or territorial displays.
This species is highly predatory and should ideally be housed in a species-specific setup. In very large aquariums, it may coexist with robust tank mates like large gars, catfish, or plecos, but tank mates should always be similar in size to avoid predation.
Feeding:
In the wild, Channa marulius consumes a variety of prey including live fish, amphibians, insects, and crustaceans. In captivity, it should be fed a diverse diet of live feeder fish, frogs, earthworms, crickets, and other high-protein foods. With time, it may accept frozen or dry foods.
