Description:

The Chinese Red Snakehead (Channa asiatica) is a relatively small yet visually striking member of the snakehead family. Originating from China and surrounding regions, this species is known for its vivid colouration and iridescent body patterns, which make it a standout in any predatory or species-specific aquarium.

C. asiatica is highly intolerant of tank mates, particularly other snakeheads, unless a stable bonded pair has formed. It is best suited for a solitary or dedicated species setup. This species also requires a seasonal variation in temperature, with a drop in water temperature during the winter months mimicking its natural habitat and encouraging healthy behaviour and breeding.

Special Considerations:

Like all snakeheads, the Chinese Red Snakehead has a labyrinth organ, allowing it to breathe atmospheric air. This adaptation enables survival in low-oxygen waters, but also makes the fish an excellent jumper — so a tight-fitting, secure aquarium lid is absolutely essential.

Due to its predatory nature, C. asiatica should not be housed with small or delicate fish. However, in large aquaria, some aquarists have had success keeping them with robust tank mates such as large plecos, big catfish, or similarly sized aggressive fish like gars. Always exercise caution when choosing companions.

Feeding:

This species is a ferocious carnivore and thrives on a diet rich in protein. In the wild, it feeds on live fish, frogs, insects, and crustaceans. In captivity, they should be fed a variety of meaty foods including live feeder fish, earthworms, crickets, frogs, and occasionally frozen or high-quality dry pellets. A varied diet ensures optimal health and colouration.
