Why is CO2 so important for aquatic plants?

Plants consist of almost 50% carbon. CO2 is therefore their most important nutrient. It serves as the basic building block for photosynthesis. From CO2, water and light, they produce their most important building material and energy source: sugar.

Without the addition of CO2, the levels present in home aquariums is always too low. Plants therefore only grow slowly or, in a lot of cases, not at all.
