Description:
The Malabar Snakehead, Channa diplogramma, is one of the most enigmatic and rare members of the snakehead family, Channidae. Native to Peninsular India, this species has long puzzled scientists due to its strong resemblance to the Giant Snakehead Channa micropeltes) of Southeast Asia.
Recent studies involving both morphological and molecular analysis have confirmed its distinct identity and revealed fascinating insights into its evolutionary lineage. Juveniles of this species are social and often hunt in groups, a behaviour that is relatively rare in snakeheads.
Behaviour and Aquarium Requirements:
Like all snakeheads, the Malabar Snakehead has an accessory respiratory organ, enabling it to breathe atmospheric air and survive in low-oxygen waters. This also means they can survive out of water for extended periods, so a strong, tightly-fitting lid is crucial to prevent escape.
Due to their aggressive and predatory nature, Malabar Snakeheads are best kept in species-only aquariums or with similarly sized, robust fish such as large catfish, gars, or plecos. Tank mates must be chosen with care and must not be small enough to be viewed as prey.
Feeding:
In the wild, Channa diplogramma feeds on fish, frogs, insects, and crustaceans. In captivity, they should be provided with a constant supply of live prey. Over time, many specimens will accept frozen food, earthworms, insects, frogs, and even prepared dry foods. Variety is essential to maintain health and colouration.
