Description:
The Meghalaya Leopard Snakehead (Channa pardalis) is a recently described species, previously known in the aquarium trade as "Channa sp. True Blue." Native to Meghalaya, India, this species is closely related to Channa stewartii and stands out with its striking leopard-like markings and vibrant coloration.
Like most members of the Channidae family, this species has a distinctive snake-like head and sharp teeth. It also possesses a labyrinth organ, allowing it to breathe atmospheric air — making a tight-fitting aquarium lid absolutely essential.
Behaviour and Compatibility:
Snakeheads are generally solitary and territorial, especially as they mature. However, juveniles may exhibit schooling and group hunting behaviour. Due to their aggressive and predatory nature, species-specific tanks are strongly recommended. In very large aquariums, tank mates may include other robust species like large gars, big catfish, or plecos — but all companions must be comparable in size.
Feeding:
Channa pardalisis a true carnivore. In the wild, its diet consists of smaller fish, insects, frogs, and crustaceans. In captivity, it should be fed live feeder fish, worms, frogs, crickets, and occasionally frozen or high-quality dry foods once acclimated.
