Description:
The Monoculus Peacock Bass (Cichla Monoculus) is one of the larger and more distinctive species within the Peacock Bass group. It is native to various parts of the Amazon basin, including Brazil, Guyana, and Peru. While wild-caught specimens are rarely available, most individuals in the aquarium trade originate from aquaculture.
Due to their popularity as sport and food fish, Monoculus Peacock Bass are farmed widely across South America and Asia. Many of the fish available in the hobby are hybrids, commonly between Cichla ocellaris and C. Monoculus. These fish grow large, are strong swimmers, and require spacious aquarium or ideally indoor ponds to accommodate their adult size. They are best suited to experienced aquarists who can provide a suitable environment and compatible tank mates.
Feeding:
The Monoculus Peacock Bass is a natural predator that feeds on live fish in the wild. Feeder fish may be needed initially, though with patience, they can usually be weaned onto frozen foods and high-quality carnivore pellets. A varied diet high in protein is key to maintaining their health and colouration.
