Description:
The Myanmar Beautiful Snakehead (Channa pulchra) is a stunning predatory fish native to the headwaters of the Kyeinthali Chaung River in Myanmar. It inhabits densely vegetated, riparian areas and displays excellent adaptability to low oxygen levels and high temperatures thanks to its accessory respiratory organ.
During dry seasons, this species can survive harsh conditions by burying itself in the substrate, a trait that highlights its hardiness and evolutionary resilience. Due to its aggressive temperament and predatory instincts, it is best kept in species-specific setups or with very carefully selected large tankmates.
Aquarium Requirements:
A tight-fitting, escape-proof lid is essential, as Channa are notorious jumpers, especially during feeding. Provide plenty of hiding spaces with driftwood, plants, and rocks to mimic their natural environment and reduce aggression. Good filtration with moderate flow and frequent partial water changes will ensure optimal health.
Feeding:
Myanmar Beautiful Snakehead is a voracious carnivore. In the wild, it feeds on live fish, frogs, insects, and crustaceans. In captivity, it should be offered a varied diet of live feeder fish (with caution), earthworms, crickets, frogs, and insects. It may also accept frozen or prepared meaty foods once acclimated.
Note: Due to disease risk, avoid regular use of feeder fish unless they are quarantined or home-bred. Supplement with high-protein pellets if accepted.
