Description:

The Ocellated Snakehead (Channa pleurophthalma) is one of the more sociable members of the Channidae family. Unlike many of its aggressive relatives, this species is known for living in groups and frequenting open water. During the rainy season, pairs will separate from the group and move into areas with dense plant growth to spawn.

A well-maintained aquarium for this species should offer abundant open swimming space along with quieter resting areas and cover. While rooted plants may be uprooted or destroyed, floating plants may still work well. Efficient filtration and regular partial water changes are essential to maintaining ideal water conditions.

This fish is an obligate air breather, so a tight-fitting lid is crucial. Leave a small gap between the water surface and the lid to allow the fish to gulp humid air, or they risk drowning. These snakeheads can be kept with peaceful tankmates that are too large to be eaten.

Feeding:

Channa pleurophthalma is an opportunistic carnivore and enjoys a varied diet. A high-quality dried food should form the staple to prevent nutritional deficiencies. Supplement with live or frozen options like bloodworm, white mosquito larvae, and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp. Live invertebrates such as earthworms, mealworms, cockroaches, or gut-loaded crickets are also ideal.
