Description
The Sulphur Head Peacock Cichlid is a dazzling variant of the Aulonocara species from Lake Malawi, distinguished by its electric blue body and vivid yellow “sulphur†stripe running from the nose to the dorsal fin. This unique “blaze†makes it one of the most sought-after peacock cichlids for show tanks.
Known for its vibrant coloration, peaceful nature (compared to Mbunas), and active personality, the Sulphur Head is best kept in well-maintained aquariums with plenty of rocks, caves, and open swimming space. Males are territorial and should be housed with multiple females or other compatible African cichlids.
These cichlids thrive in hard, alkaline water that mimics Lake Malawi’s natural environment. A sandy substrate and rocky décor not only bring out their natural behavior but also reduce aggression.
Feed them a varied omnivorous diet to enhance coloration and overall health. High-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-based foods, and occasional treats like brine shrimp or krill are ideal.
The Aulonocara sp. “Sulphur Head†is a perfect choice for intermediate aquarists looking to add color, elegance, and movement to their African cichlid tank.
