Description:
Once considered rare in the aquarium trade, the Xingu Peacock Bass (Cichla melaniae) is now more readily available thanks to commercial breeding efforts in Asia and Brazil. Native to the fast-flowing lower Rio Xingu, this species is prized for both its bold appearance and predatory nature.
Adult specimens exhibit a vibrant yellow body with a horizontal broken black stripe along their flank, giving them a striking look. Like all peacock bass, the Xingu is a large, powerful predator and requires a suitably large aquarium, ideally maintained by experienced aquarists. They are best kept in small groups of similarly sized cichlids. Be aware that aggression and territorial behaviours can intensify as the fish mature.
Feeding:
The Xingu Peacock Bass is a carnivorous predator that naturally consumes live fish. Initially, feeder fish will be required, but with time and training, they usually adapt to frozen foods and high-quality carnivore pellets. A varied and protein-rich diet is essential for their growth and health.
