Natural aquarium rocks and pebbles are the quickest way to add shape, depth and hiding places to a tank. Our range includes Seiryu stone, dragon stone, slate, lava rock, zebra rock and quartz, from small decorative pieces to 20kg bags for larger layouts, from Aquadeco, Hugo Kamishi, Aqua One, Fluval, Tropica and our own Swell range.
Rocks are the foundation of many striking layouts, from a minimal arrangement of Seiryu stone to a stacked, cave-filled cliff of dragon stone. Smaller stones and quartz finish the base of your rockwork or edge a path through the substrate.
They are natural or synthetic stones sold for use in tanks. They will not break down in the water or spread disease, but natural rock can release minerals that change your water chemistry, which suits some fish better than others.
Some will. Limestone rocks, which include many grey, striated stones such as Seiryu, can raise pH and hardness, while inert rocks such as slate usually will not. If you keep soft-water fish or shrimp, be sure to research your chosen rock before adding to the aquarium.
Pick a rock type and stick to it for a natural look, and use a few larger pieces rather than many small ones. Rest heavy rocks on the base of the tank, not on top of the substrate, so burrowing fish cannot undermine them. Finish the base with aquarium sand or gravel.
Mosses and ferns such as Anubias attach well to rock, so see our epiphytic aquarium plants. For a more natural layout, combine stone with bogwood and driftwood, or browse all aquarium hardscape.
