Do my aquatic plants need CO2 and fertiliser?

Aquatic plants need CO2, light, and nutrients to grow. Leaving out one of these essentials can stall growth and cause algae to bloom instead. CO2 fuels photosynthesis, while root tabs and fertiliser supply nutrients that plants cannot get from water alone.

Should I choose a CO2 unit or root tabs and fertiliser?

A CO2 unit supplies carbon which aids photosynthesis, while root tabs and liquid fertiliser supply nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, and iron, which carbon alone cannot provide. A heavily planted tank usually needs both, CO2 for growth rate and colour, and fertiliser to feed it. CO2 gives a bigger boost, while root tabs suit root-feeding plants in a small tank with few plants.

Setting up a new planted tank

Then you will need to choose a method that best suits your tank, whether it's a full pressurised CO2 kit for a heavily planted setup, or a liquid carbon supplement for a simple solution in less demanding tanks, and choose some fish tank lighting that supports plant growth, since plants need CO2, nutrients, and light to thrive.
