Cappuccino Black Devil Snail (Faunus ater “Cappuccino” sp.)
Overview:
The Cappuccino Black Devil Snail is a striking freshwater snail admired for its long, cone-shaped shell with rich cappuccino-brown tones and smooth texture. Its elegant appearance and slow, graceful movements make it a fascinating addition to planted and community aquariums.
Origin:
Faunus ater is native to Southeast Asia and parts of the Indo-Pacific region, where it inhabits rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters with sandy or muddy substrates.
Feeding:
Omnivorous scavenger. Feeds on algae, biofilm, detritus, and leftover fish food. Supplement with algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach if natural food sources are limited.
Tank / Setup Requirements:
-
Minimum tank size: 40 litres (10 gallons)
-
Sand or fine substrate recommended for natural burrowing behaviour
-
Provide rocks, driftwood, and décor for grazing surfaces
-
Stable water parameters with good filtration recommended
Tank Mates:
Suitable for peaceful community aquariums with non-aggressive fish and invertebrates. Avoid snail-eating species such as puffers or large loaches.
Behaviour:
Peaceful and slow-moving. Often seen burrowing in the substrate or grazing on algae and biofilm. While they may lay eggs in freshwater, successful breeding typically requires brackish conditions.
Experience Level:
Beginner to intermediate. Hardy and easy to care for when kept in stable water conditions.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
-
pH: 7.0–8.5
-
Water Type: Freshwater
-
Hardness: Moderate to hard water preferred for shell health.
