What are Hanna Ammonia Reagents?

Hanna Ammonia Reagents are replacement reagents for the Hanna Freshwater Ammonia Low Range Checker available in a pack of 25 tests. These reagents are high-quality and pre-measured, allowing for users to achieve fast and accurate measurements with their ammonia checker. These reagents follow the Nessler Method in which the reaction between ammonia and reagents causes a yellow tint in the sample. By simply adding 4 drops from each bottle of the Hanna Ammonia Reagent set to the sample, the reaction will take place and the Hanna Freshwater Ammonia Low Range Checker (sold separately) will determine the concentration from the colour that is produced. The results will be displayed in ppm (mg/L) of ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N). These reagents are designed to be used with samples that have an expected range of 0.00 to 3.00ppm ammonia-nitrogen. To convert the reading to ppm of ammonia (NH3) multiply the result by 1.214.

How do I get an accurate measurement using Hanna Ammonia Reagents?

There are a few things to note when wanting to achieve an accurate measurement:

  • It is important that the sample does not contain debris
  • Whenever the cuvette is placed into the measurement cell, it must be dry outside and completely free of fingerprints, oil or dirt. Wipe it thoroughly with a lint-free cloth prior to insertion.
  • Shaking the cuvette can generate bubbles, causing higher readings. To obtain accurate measurements, remove such bubbles by swirling or by gently tapping the cuvette.
  • Do not let the reacted sample stand for too long after reagent is added, or accuracy will be lost.
  • After the reading, it is important to discard the sample immediately, otherwise the glass might become permanently stained.
