Help and advice on shopping for: Fish Tanks

Create an aquarium your fish will love

Fish tanks come in all shapes and sizes, offering comfort for your fish and a stylish centrepiece for your home. In our fish tank range, there is something to suit every type of aquarist and a fish, including cold water, tropical and marine species. In our full range of fish tanks, you will find leading aquarium manufacturers, including Biorb aquariums from Oase, Evolution Aqua, Aqua One, AquaEl and Fluval.

What are fish tanks?

Fish tanks have come a long way from a brittle glass bowl on a bookshelf. Our full range of modernised aquariums are larger, offering more comfort to resident fish. Aquariums are designed to be much more durable, ensuring that leaks and breakages are rare. All fish tanks must also be placed on a specially designed cabinet that doubles as storage for hardware, food and other supplies. Unlike a standard bookcase, these cabinets are reinforced to take the weight of the large water volume on top of them. Therefore, your aquarium will be positioned safely for optimal display. Cabinets can be purchased separately, or part of a bundle depending on what stock is available.

What is the difference between a fish tank and an aquarium?

Fish tanks are designed mainly for holding fish as the name suggests, regulated for aquarists to study and enjoy live-stock. A tank is nothing more until you fill it up. Once a tank is holding fish, plants, decorations, substrates etc, an aquarium is made. Aquariums are made for holding an underwater closed ecosystem. You can create different types of aquariums such as planted, tropical, freshwater and marine. The phrases "fish tank" and "aquarium" are interchangeable, but technically have their own definitions.

What are the main types of fish tanks?

We sell six types of fish tanks; bowl fish tanks, cold water fish tanks, corner fish tanks, fish tank stands, marine fish tanks and tropical fish tanks. Bowl fish tanks are designed to hold very small species of tropical or cold water fish. Cold water fish tanks are designed to hold fish that are comfortable with fresh water outside of the tropics. Corner fish tanks are built to fit into the corner of your room using the space effectively. Fish tank stands are specially reinforced stands that have been purpose-built to support aquariums. Marine fish tanks are designed to hold saltwater fish and are typically the largest tanks. Tropical tanks are heated tanks that provide a habitat suitable for tropical fish.

Why should I buy a fish tank?

Traditional Fish tanks and aquariums have been proven to relieve stress and even lower blood pressure in those that own them. They form the centrepiece of any room, especially when decorated with fish tank ornaments, plants and backgrounds. Fish tanks are also a fantastic choice for parents, as they easily capture the imagination of children and present a wide range of education opportunities.

What should I look for in an aquarium?

As a aquarist or hobbyist getting into the fish keeping hobby, choosing an aquarium is about finding something suitable. It is recommended to research the inhabitants, decorations and hardware you intend to buy before making the purchase. It is strongly advised to find out exactly how much space each fish you plan to own will need. You can then cater the size and design of your tank to those specifications. Once you have completed your much needed research, you can look at stocking up on all the hardware and accessories you will need. This will include a filter, lighting equipment, heater, decorations and substrate.
