Help and advice on shopping for: Aquarium UV Sterilisers

Remove bacteria and viruses from your water

UV Sterilisers are clever devices for keeping your aquarium free from unsightly and dangerous build-ups of algae blooms, bacteria and even viruses. Our range of UV sterilisers includes products from leading brands like AquaEl, Evolution Aqua and Fluval.

What are UV sterilisers?

UV sterilisers are pieces of aquarium hardware that expose your water to small doses of UV light, killing bacteria and viruses while causing algae to clump together so it can be removed by a filter. UV sterilisers produce crystal-clear water, perfect for use in any aquarium.

Why should I buy UV sterilisers?

UV sterilisers are incredible pieces of technology that will protect your aquarium inhabitants from most diseases and pathogens. They don’t remove non-organic matter from your water, like vitamins and minerals, so they won’t affect the overall chemistry of your water. UV sterilisers are particularly useful for protecting invertebrates like coral and anemones in marine aquariums.

What are the main types of UV sterilisers?

We sell three types of UV steriliser products; aquarium UV bulbs, ozonisers and UV sterilizer. Aquarium UV bulbs are the bulbs used in UV sterilisers that produce UV light. Ozonisers are a related product that fires concentrated ozone at biological waste to neutralise it. UV sterilisers are the actual pieces of hardware that are fitted into your aquarium or watercourse to remove bacteria, viruses and algae from your water.

What should I look for?

A great way to work out if a UV steriliser is right for your tank is to look at the flow rate of the steriliser, this will give you an indication of how much water the hardware can purify in an hour. As you’ll likely be running your UV steriliser constantly, it’s also worth checking the energy usage, ensuring that you are comfortable with the running costs of a product before buying it.
