The Best Pond Pumps For Every Garden Pond
No matter which style of pond you’re building, the right pump makes all the difference. With so many different models available, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. In this guide, we’ve broken down the best models for all setups, from large, heavily stocked ponds to compact, raised, and even pondless features.
Best pump for small ponds
Recommended: Swell Inpond All In One 5000
For small ponds, an all-in-one pump is perfect. Featuring built in filtration and UV, these compact units offer efficient water circulation and help maintain clarity. With no external filters, you can expect minimal wiring, allowing for a seamless appearance.
Why it works:
- Combines a pump, filter, and UV in one unit
- Perfect for preformed or patio ponds
- Easy installation and maintenance

The Swell Inpond All In One 5000 is a fantastic plug-and-play option. Ideal for first-time pond keepers, this kit includes everything you'll need to get started. With this pump you get an adjustable fountain, biological and mechanical filter media, and a UV clarifier. This pump is also available with and without colour changing LED lights.
Tip: Models that feature LED lights can create a beautiful view of your pond, even at night.
Best pump for large Koi or heavily stocked ponds
Recommended: Oase Aquamax Eco Premium
Large or heavily stocked ponds, especially those with Koi, require a high-capacity pump. This pump will be able to handle waste and keep water movement consistent. These ponds have a high organic load, so a solids handling pump is essential.
Why it works:
- Handles large volumes of waste and debris
- Designed to be left running permanently
- Works with high performance filters and UVs

The Oase Aquamax Eco Premium is often referred to as one of the most reliable koi pond pumps. Featuring frost protection and dry-run safety, this pump can handle solids up to 11mm. Thanks to this, it's ideal for long-term use.
Tip: Pair with a pressurised filter for best results. Browse our range of pressurised filters here.
Best pump for raised ponds
Recommended: Hozelock Aquaforce
Raised ponds typically have limited planting zones as well as less natural filtration. Due to this, you'll want to choose a reliable pump that can easily handle fish waste, keeping your water clean with no need to rely on natural filtration. A strong solids handling pump is ideal for this.
Why it works:
- Moves debris to your filter with ease
- Fits in shallow or narrow ponds
- Compatible with pressure filters for sleek setups

The Hozelock Aquaforce is easy to install and quick to maintain. With a flow ideal for small-medium raised ponds, the design includes a wildlife protection insert that prevents harm to small creatures.
Tip: Prevent blockages from sludge by placing the pump on bricks or a stand slightly off the bottom of the pond.
Best pump for wildlife ponds
Recommended: Swell Filter Pump
Wildlife ponds require gentle circulation to prevent stagnant water, supporting a natural habitat. A low powered pump provides steady water movement whilst not disturbing plants or wildlife.
Why it works:
- Low flow rate for wildlife ecosystems
- Quiet operation with minimal disruption
- Capable of handling fine debris

The Swell Filter Pump has been designed for continuous use whilst being affordable. This pump is perfect for shallow wildlife ponds.
Tip: Using UV clarifiers in wildlife ponds may harm microorganisms that benefit a natural ecosystem.
Best pump for waterfalls
Recommended: Oase Aquamax Eco Twin
Dual motor pumps are best for offering flexibility and strength, ideal for dramatic waterfall features. Waterfalls need higher powered pumps, especially if they are tall or multi-tiered.
Why it works:
- Dual-motor for high power and flow control
- High performance even at a height
- Can run two features simultaneously

The Oase Aquamax Eco Twin allows for control over each motor separately so you can operate a waterfall and filter from one unit. This quiet and powerful device is highly efficient, despite its size.
Tip: Calculate vertical lift and horizontal pipe run to size your pump correctly.
Best pump for pondless water features
Recommended: Oase Aquamax Eco Classic
For a pondless water feature, you'll need a pump that can run continuously underground and handle debris without frequent maintenance. A low-profile solids-handling pump is ideal for these features.
Why it works:
- Compact design that fits well in underground reservoirs
- Handles debris effectively
- Prevents clog damage and dry-running

The Oase Aquamax Eco Classic is perfect for compact features, even without a pond. This energy-efficient pump handles debris up to 8mm, and features dry-run protection.
Tip: Adding a mesh pre-filter sponge or cage can reduce reservoir clogging, simplifying maintenance.
Best solar-only pump
Recommended: Hozelock Solar Fountain Pump
Solar pumps are best for small ponds, especially those in remote locations where an outlet is not present. These pumps are perfect for circulating your water with no running cost.
Why it works:
- Doesn't require mains wiring
- Includes fountain heads for a decorative feature
- Ideal for small wildlife or patio ponds

The Hozelock Solar Fountain Pump is a compact unit that runs from solar power. This unit is fantastic for a simple yet beautiful fountain effect, whilst remaining eco-friendly.
Tip: For a more consistent performance, position the solar panel in full sunlight, avoiding shaded areas.
What else should I consider when choosing my pond pump?
- Flow rate: we recommend choosing a pump that can turn over the entire volume of your pond within an hour for fish ponds. Slower circulation is best for wildlife ponds.
- Head height: check that the flow is adequate at the required height.
- Maintenance: look for models that have accessible impellers and removable strainer cages to make maintenance as simple as possible.
- Energy efficiency: compare wattage vs flow rate for the most efficient model, keeping running costs low.

Could you please email me which model of pond pump I need for a pond which has 2 meters width, 5 meters length and 30cms depth?
Best wishes

I have a 2300 Oase pump but it does not give enough flow to the waterfall, even without the filter so to get a good splash am I looking at about an 8000 over double to be sure?
